In early 2021, longing for geysers, yet stuck in the UK due to Covid-19, I obsessively scoured the internet for ways to connect remotely, shoring up postcards from eBay and watching webcams.
Discovering a livestream of Old Faithful, I found myself repeatedly checking in on how it was doing, what it was up to and it became like a penpal, of which I had 84 when I was 13! As a lone teenage Marxist environmental activist stuck in the Kent suburbs, yet longing for mutuality and cultural expansiveness, I had created a network of connections, getting to know likeminded souls incrementally, letter by letter. Echoing such a slow reveal, I took well over a year to gather the stills from the webcam, gradually getting to know this distant animal. Click by click the subtle audio exposes such seeking, using film to collapse both time and distance and pull this body closer.
Digital film, 5 minutes 52 seconds.
